The Business Intelligence Report Developer is responsible for the design and development of Microsoft Power BI reports and dashboards drawing together data from various sources and systems. The position will work closely with clients and business teams to turn critical data into actionable information to support data driven management decisions and strategy development. This position will collaborate with cross functional teams comprised of stakeholders, leaders, and subject matter experts to gather requirements, test designs, and validate results prior to production publishing. To be effective, the BI Report Developer must acquire and maintain a solid understanding of project related business processes, metrics, goals etc., to at least a level sufficient for critical data issue identification, troubleshooting and resolution. The BI Report Developer must possess an advanced working knowledge of a variety of data visualization tools including, but not limited to, Microsoft Power BI. To be successful in this position, the BI Report Developer must be able to perform multiple roles including architect, report developer, metadata modeler, SQL programmer, and end user trainer/mentor. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Participate in business analysis activities to gather required reporting and dashboard requirements in a manner that creates and maintains positive cross organizational working relationships
  • Acquire and maintain a solid understanding of project related business processes, metrics, goals etc., to at least a level sufficient for critical data issue identification, troubleshooting, and resolution
  • Engage stakeholders, leaders, and subject matter experts as needed to clarify and define report and dashboard requirements, design elements, metrics, expected output, user/audience, overall purpose, and projected timelines/due dates
  • Translate business requirements into documented specifications for design, build, and implementation of requested report(s) and/or dashboard(s)
  • Obtain access to related data source(s) and craft efficient queries as needed to ensure report and dashboard datasets are accurate, appropriately related to the defined specifications, and purpose, and avoid any unnecessarily burdens or slowness on system performance
  • Build requested reports and dashboards using data visualization tools that are accessible to the intended audience. Key tools are Power BI, Tableau and others as assigned
  • Design reports and dashboards in a manner that is easily understood and actionable. The product should succinctly convey the key insights or “story” that the data reveals through logical groupings, summaries, charts, or other visualization methods
  • Perform unit and integration testing. Participate in reporting validation and quality assurance efforts as they pertain to reporting and data analytics
  • Follow processes and procedures for monitoring reporting accuracy and system issues.  Procedures should provide for related issue resolution tracking and timely user communication methods
  • Actively and positively engage subject matter experts to test the usability and understandability of the design and to validate results prior to production publication
  • Participate in the identification and documentation of best practices related to data visualization platform integrations
  • Provide ad hoc subject matter expert (SME) support to other company departments as needed in development of new customer proposals or other companywide initiatives as assigned
  • Participate in project review meetings and provide project planning input with regular updates
  • Investigate all customer/end user reported dashboard or reporting issues. Communicate outcomes of reported issues back to the customers/end users in a timely manner
  • Conduct both in person and online training sessions with users as needed to promote accurate understanding of the report and dashboard capabilities, usage requirements, and benefits

Minimum Qualifications:


  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, computer science, MIS, CIS, or equivalent experience is preferred
  • Business Intelligence certifications desired, Microsoft Power BI certification preferred


  • A minimum of two years of experience in business intelligence roles preferred
  • One year experience as a Microsoft Power BI developer preferred
  • Demonstrated knowledge of SQL with the ability to write complex SQL queries required
  • Demonstrated strong performance in prior roles, with increasing levels of responsibility, and independence preferred

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Distinctive problem solving and analytical skills, combined with impeccable business judgment
  • Able to deal with ambiguity by taking many factors into account, determining strategy, and maintaining efforts to meet the strategy
  • Ability to manage, assess, and adjust quickly to changing priorities
  • Proficient in spreadsheet, reporting, and database tools (e.g., Excel, Access, other Microsoft Office applications)
  • Proficient understanding of operational and analytical business intelligence solutions
  • Strong understanding of relational and multi-dimensional database architectures
  • Proficient knowledge of logical and physical data modeling concepts (relational and dimensional)
  • Strong Power BI development, including visualization, parameters, and report optimization
  • Advanced understanding of query languages
  • Must be able to travel 5-10% regularly and more/less at times
  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral) with various levels within the organization. Strong communications (written and oral), interpersonal and organizational skills in a team environment
  • Must be a self-starter capable of performing duties with limited supervision
  • Ability to work with others in a high volume fast paced environment as well as ability to work in
